Air Gong presents a short catharsis built in Decker for MenHera VN Jam 2024:

Self-Portrait, Vomit on Concrete

It's the night after Kate's birthday, and she's feeling the regret in her stomach. It's the perfect day to stay inside and let her girlfriend Sarah nurse her back to health- if only she didn't have therapy to go to.  As the day drags onward, Kate will struggle against her inner fears while desperately clinging to the one thing that keeps her anchored: love.

Featuring:

  • A kinetic, emotional story of around 4K words
  • Wiggly drawings and dithered photographs
  • Several panic attacks and multiple scenes of vomiting
  • Therapy
  • And more!

Staff:

  • Photography, illustrations, programming and writing by Crystal DeForest
  • Art assistance by Sadie DeForest
  • Edited and playtested by Alexandra Ferm (Alexandra IDV)
  • WigglyPaint app and Decker engine by Internet Janitor
  • All sound CC0 public domain
Self-Portrait, Vomit on Concrete is intended for mature audiences only. Click the arrow to view the content warning for this story. As you might expect, this story has multiple scenes of vomiting. Much of the story revolves around the aftermath of a night of heavy drinking. There are allusions to abuse, as well as a brief mention of suicidal ideation. There's a joking reference to a transphobic remark, and a sex scene that involves an abstract depiction of nudity. Please make sure you're in a good state of mind before reading this.

The presentation is very fun and really sells the sheer panic at key moments. Very sweet game!

so real, so raw & cathartic!! i really love all the 3-frame squigglevision stuff, I laughed aloud at the animal ears drop, and was frozen in place just the same when Kate's animation stopped after the therapist's question. i really loved when the intrusive thoughts became so much that you had to scroll through the individual windows. a lot of clever tricks and symbolism and altogether a really honest and heartwarming thing. thank you for sharing!!

Really like this, the range of feelings you were able to depict for someone who's life is like this felt super real. Really cathartic and sweet story...

Oughhhh this feels so good to read!!! First off the opening scene, the 'Happy 31st birthday" was such an amazing way to start, and the feelings and writing and especially the art delivered everything so wondefully. I love this VN so much!!! Definitely one of my favorites out of this jam :D

My malevolence, what a powerful little VN this is~

Above all else, the writing well and truly sings: It's so heartfelt, earnest, and visceral!  For that matter, the simplicity of the art style belies how potent and evocative it is—and similarly, the underspoken background music matches the scenario and overall aesthetic alike seamlessly, heheheh~  And the ending was so sweet and heartwarming, to boot~

Excellent work, truly!
